Using this web site

This is a democratically owned and managed web site .. or at least it plans to be, as the appropriate structures, policies and processes are put into place.

Appropriate content

Anybody can register with the site, and add content, so long as it is appropriate:

  • It should be relevant to permaculture, but in a broad sense, whether to do with sustainable food, community issues, music and art, or international issues, for example;
  • If you publish stuff that is wholly inappropriate, i.e. it is fascist in intent, then it will be removed by the editors. If you carry on doing this, then your account will probably be closed down;
  • If you publish something that has good intention, but has some inappropriate content, then you will probably be contacted by the editors, and asked to alter it, or remove it.

Making best use

  • If you want a quick hit from the front page, the best way is to add a short news article, or event.
  • For a permanent link from the site your best bet is to set up a project page.
  • If you want to generate some serious interest, then create a blog article. If the blog is of a good enough standard the editors will publish it on the front page, at your request, or at our discretion. In order to be published on the front page a blog article must be relevant, well written, and have imagery, or other multi-media content embedded or linked.
  • Also you can use the email function, to forward a linked summary of your content to wherever you like. For example, if you create an event for Manchester Permaculture Network, you can email it straight to the Yahoo mailing list if you have an account with this.
  • If you do not have an account with the mailing list, you can get one by filling in the form on the left.

Leaving comments

All readers can write comments about content on the site. Please do this, as it helps to make the site interesting and interactive.

Weaving a web

When writing content for the site, we encourage you to create links wherever possible. Especially try to link your content with other items, or users within the site, as this helps to create synergy, and bind it all together. (If you create a link that is external to the site, look for the option that opens the page in a new window, as this will help to keep folk in our site ..)

Social networking

The site contains some social networking features, and these are expected to grow in the future. You can add a profile about yourself as a registered user. Why not add a photo, and an email link, and build in links to your blog, or myspace or facebook, so we can see how creative you are ..!

New users also get a contact form, from which you can be emailed. You can turn this of if you do not want to be contacted via the site.

There is also a 'Email users' facility that allows you to email all users of the site. Please only do this if you have something important to say about the site itself. If you want to reach a wide audience with general news, then join Manchester Permaculture Yahoo group, or create some content on the site.

Site architecture and democracy

We are planning on setting up a forum on the site, with which interested parties can discuss, and make decisions about how this site is used and developed. This will be obvious when it is set up. It is not clear who owns this site or its content as yet, more information about this will be published, when it has been investigated and discussed. The intention is that it will be a commonly owned resource.

The editorial team

  • The editorial team are responsible for ensuring that the site is populated with interesting, well written, and current information.
  • Note that the editorial team are not responsible for site architecture and democracy, which is discussed above.
  • The current editorial team are Rob Squires and Fraser How. If you are interested in helping with this role, then please get in touch.
  • Also please contact us if you would like any further advice about how to use the site, or about writing quality content.
  • We are especially interested to hear from folk who want to provide quality blog articles for publishing on the front page.

If you would like to contact the editors, then use the 'Contact us' link at the top of the site.
