Nadezhda project
"A place to live and work in a beautiful and ecologically sound style of living"

Current action: Looking for additional land. Group coming together in Bulgaria next spring - 2010

Nadezhda is a group of people, all with the aim to live sustainably and cooperatively in an environment we design and create for ourselves with the help of as many like-minded people as possible.
We have been together as a group for the last four years, and during that time the vision of nadezhda has grown and changed dramatically. However, our aspirations remain:
-
Sustainable living.
-
Building ecological housing.
-
To live in a peaceful and restful retreat.
-
To be a fluid and ever-changing community with long and short term residents.
-
Generation of income through eco tourism and educational projects.
-
To be continually growing and evolving.
-
To use permaculture and landscape design philosophies.
-
Self-suffiency through food production and energy generation.
-
To create an environment which positively inspires others.

This is the land which we bought summer 2008
Current action.....
-
We have purchased 15,000m2 of land near Sopot in mid Bulgaria, with the intention of buying another 15,000m2 of land soon.
-
We are continuing the development of ways and structures for people to join the group. We love our group but it wants to grow.....
-
Next visit is likely to be December 2010 for Leona and spring 2010 for Kelda. After this we hope to have more of the group residential in Bulgaria, so ideas can slowly become reality. As ever, visitors are glady welcomed.

Sustainable land management at
Hi Kelda, Nadezhda is in a brittle to semi-brittle landscape, characterised by low rainfall and atmospheric moisture, and in danger of becoming desertified if not managed properly. Here are some essential research areas that I think we need to be looking into therefore:
It is very important therefore to apply the right grazing strategies, to improve biodiversity and system resilience. Holistic Management – Alan Savory, is an essential resource to ensure this: http://www.holisticmanagement.org
Also Keyline planning is a permanent agriculture system designed to increase soil fertility and maximise the beneficial use of water resources on the site. With summer temperature in Bulgaria reaching 40C, this is clearly another essential research area. See:
The Keyline Plan by P.A.Yeomans (online book):

Plus also Keyline planning on Wikipedia:

Another good resource is Darren Docherty: www.permaculture.biz
Also essential watching, Sepp Holzer on Youtube: Farming with Nature; and Farming with Water.
